“Why do you call me, LORD, LORD, and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46)
1.In vs 46 Jesus shows us what it truly looks like to CALL HIM LORD (Romans 10:9)!! It means living in obedience to His word!! (See Matthew 7:21-23)
The word “Lord” in the Greek is Kyrios, which means master, owner, one to whom a person belongs and who has the power of deciding over. If Jesus is our Lord, then He is our master and owner and the one who has the power of deciding what we should do. In this sense therefore, we are called to be OBEDIENT TO HIS WORD and submit to HIS WILL if we see Him as LORD!
2.In vs 47, Jesus calls us to COME TO HIM, HEAR HIS WORDS and PUT THEM INTO PRACTICE! These are 3 things we are called to do if we truly see Jesus as Lord here! This ties in with James 1:22 which tells us to not just to be HEARERS OF GOD’S WORD, BUT DOERS!! (Matthew 7:24)
If we don’t seek Jesus and come to Him (eg. By reading His word, spending time with Him in prayer, being in His house to hear His servants preach and teach), we won’t be in a position to hear His words!! Once we hear His words, we need to be obedient and live out His words!!
Q. ARE WE SPENDING INTIMATE TIME WITH JESUS TO HEAR HIS WORD AND VOICE?
Q. ARE WE BEING OBEDIENT TO HIS WORD AND VOICE?
Now in vs 48, Jesus likens those who HEAR and OBEY HIS WORD to a man who builds his house on a firm foundation of ROCK for when the floods come...
3.vs 48- “WHEN the flood came...” Notice this verse doesn’t say “If” the flood comes? This reminds us that Jesus never promised that we would be EXEMPT from the trials, troubles, persecutions and storms of life!! In fact in John 16:33 Jesus said “In this world you will have trouble.” (See Philippians 1:29, Romans 8:17, 1 Peter 4:12, Matthew 5:11-12). But what Jesus promises here, is that if our foundation is on Him and living out His word as the ROCK (1 Peter 2:4), WE WILL BE ABLE TO STAND FIRM AND NOT BE SHAKEN BY THE STORM!
4.vs 49, In contrast, the one who has no foundation in Jesus and obeying His word will be overcome by the storms in life!! In Luke 8:13, Jesus puts it this way in the parable of the sower, in that the seed that fell on the rock stands for those who “receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have NO ROOT. They believe for a while, but in the TIME OF TESTING THEY FALL AWAY.”
Luke 8:15 “But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who HEAR THE WORD, RETAIN IT, and by PERSEVERING PRODUCE A CROP.”
If we truly see JESUS AS LORD, will we also learn to HEAR AND LIVE OUT HIS WORDS?
